The documentary "Hands of Hope" premiered on both domestic and international platforms, including the Discovery Channel and Nanfang News Network, on September 28, 2025, marking the 68th World Deaf Day. The film, produced over two years, traces the journey of educators from China and Laos collaborating to support hearing-impaired children across borders.
The story centers on Sophaphone Heuanglith, a young principal in her 30s who founded the Hands of Hope School for the Deaf, the only private school for deaf children in Laos, located in the suburb of Vientiane. Despite limited resources and staff, she has dedicated herself to creating a haven for 25 students with hearing impairment.
The turning point came in 2022 when China Southern Power Grid discovered the school during a power supply project for the China-Laos Railway. Moved by Sophaphone's commitment, the company launched the "Lights of Hope" initiative, providing essential teaching materials and infrastructure support.
To help realize Sophaphone's wish to observe the advanced approaches to deaf education in China, the volunteers of China Southern Power Grid launched a cross-border project, supporting Sophaphone and her team to travel to Guangzhou. In the city, they managed to learn about the supportive system in China from early screening and cochlear implants to rehabilitation training and inclusive education.
Sophaphone also met He Jingxian, the retired principal of Guangzhou Qicong School, a pioneering figure in China's deaf education community. Despite their age gap and language barriers, the two educators bonded over their shared mission.
Inspired by her experience in China, Sophaphone returned to Laos and established a vocational training center for the deaf, focusing on handicraft production to promote economic independence among hearing-impaired individuals.
Co-created by China Review Studio, Discovery Channel, and China Southern Power Grid, the documentary highlights the power of cross-border solidarity and the universal belief that education should empower more individuals, regardless of ability or circumstance.
